Sunday amounted to the second NSIC sweep of the regular season for the Northern State University softball team who tallied a combined 15 hits and 11 runs scored against the Wildcats. In addition, it was the first sweep of the Wildcats since 2017 and only the second in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1

  • Northern tallied their six runs on seven hits in the game one victory, scoring two in the first, one in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth
  • Liv Richardson and Avarie Eagle each scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first, after reaching base on a single to right and walk
  • Wayne State tied the game in the bottom of the frame and took a 3-2 lead in the second
  • Ashley Fauske opened the third with a walk and knotted the scoreboard up at 3-all on a single to left by Kyra Knudtson
  • Emma Owens grabbed the lead for the Wolves in the fourth with a lead off double to right center; she came around to score on a sacrifice fly to left by Fauske
  • Knudtson and Elly Smith added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth, with Knudtson scoring on a double by Smith and Smith scoring on a groundout by Alexandria Arndt
  • Lexi Chase threw her fifth win of the season, a complete game that saw just one earned run and season high eight strikeouts
  • Richardson led the offense as the only Wolf to record multiple hits, while Eagle, Smith, and Owens accounted for the extra base knocks

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2

  • The Wolves added five runs on eight hits in the game two victory, scoring two in the third, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh
  • Wayne State tallied one run in the first at-bats of the contest and held Northern scoreless through the first two frames
  • Claire Zbylut tied the game with a double down the right field line (scoring Chase) and took the lead for the Wolves on a single to right center by Eagle
  • The Wildcats rallied back and grabbed the 4-2 lead in the fourth with three runs off four hits
  • Chase and Zbylut tied the game in the fifth, scoring on an error by the WSC centerfield and a double down the left field line by Eagle
  • Starter Abby Rux held Wayne State off the base paths in the fifth and sixth innings and Northern scored the decisive game winning run in the seventh
  • Chase crossed home plate on a ground out to the right side by Richardson
  • Rux tallied her third win of the season, tossing a complete game with nine hits, four runs (three earned) and five strikeouts
  • Zbylut led the offense, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, while Eagle and Chase grabbed two hits apiece
