NSU Spring Jazz Concert set for March 9

ABERDEEN, S.D.(Press Release) – At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, the Northern State University Music Department will present its Spring Jazz Concert in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater.

The concert will feature the 1 O’clock Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Terry Beckler, and the 2 O’clock Jazz Ensemble, Directed by Dr. Grant Manhart.

Guest artists with the 2 O’clock Jazz Ensemble will be local pianist Ron Parker; visiting traveling nurse and jazz and pop singer “Izzy”; professor of woodwinds and jazz, Fritz Hemke; and Dr. Travis Netzer, professor of low brass and bands.

The groups will play a variety of styles including “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You,” made famous by trombonist and band leader Tommy Dorsey, performed by Junior Music Major Noelle Nemmers.

Also performed will be a few modern pieces, including “Song for My Father” by Horace Silver; “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire; and a very new piece by “Too Many Zooz,” featuring Travis Netzer on tuba.
