Ali’i Loyola made his Northern State wrestling debut Thursday in dramatic fashion, sealing the match victory for the Wolves in overtime. The 18-15 win for the NSU over #20 Upper Iowa is the Wolves’ first win over the Peacocks in the NCAA Division II era.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· Following an opening loss at 125 pounds, Northern State bounced back with three victories by Ty Althoff, Kolton Roth, and Wyatt Turnquist to gain the lead
· Althoff and Roth won by decision, while Turnquist came up clutch with a victory by fall
· The remaining six matches of the event were determined by decision, including a 9-3 win by sophomore #10 James Burks for the Wolves
· The Wolves and Peacocks were tied at 15-all heading into the final bout of the evening
· Ali’i Loyola took on Jordan Baumler and trailed 1-0 heading into the final period of the match
· Loyola tied things with an escape early on and fended off an attacking Baumler
· The Wolves graduate transfer came out with a new fire in the first overtime period, choosing bottom and quickly notching a reversal on Baumler
· Baumler answered back with an escape, forcing the next round of overtime
· Loyola grabbed an escape to begin the second overtime period and battled Baumler for 30 seconds, fighting off numerous escape attempts to seal the victory
· The Wolves are now 1-15 all-time versus Upper Iowa, kicking off the NSIC season strong
