WASHINGTON, D.C.(KMIT)- October is National Farm to School Month. Cindy Long, Deputy Under Secretary for Food Nutrition and Consumer Service describes the event:
Funding is available for schools to get food from local producers. Again, Secretary Long:
Unfortunately, for many students in South Dakota their school meal is the best one they will have that day.
Nutritional programs comprise 80% of the farm bill and that includes school meals. Cindy Long, Deputy Under Secretary at the USDA talks about the farm to school lunch table program.
Secretary Long points out that school lunches are not what they used to be.
Ag producers and the nation’s children await a new farm bill.
There is one additional cut that I’ve included. Its the USDA School Lunch Professionals Meeting. I didn’t work it into a story but I send it along in case you can use it in some way.
