RAPID CITY, S.D. (KBHB) – Sheriff’s officials say a man who killed a person in a Rapid City apartment has been shot and killed by law enforcement after opening fire on officers.
Authorities say officers were called to the apartment building on the 800 block of Minnesota Street about 5 p.m. Sunday, on a report of shots fired. Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom says when officers arrived a man on the second floor of the building began shooting at them, striking one of their vehicles.
Thom called the situation “very dynamic, very chaotic,” when talking to reporters last evening.
Assistant Police Chief Don Hedrick described the events, saying that officers entered the building and fatally shot the man who fired at them on arrival at the scene.
Hedrick says a shooting victim was located in a second floor apartment as police were able to move into the structure.
Hedrick declined to identify either the alleged shooter or the victim, saying next of kin would need to be notified. Hedrick says that a full investigation is under way, and that police will try to release more information sometime today.
