STURGIS, S.D.(KBHB) – For the second year in a row, the Sturgis City Council has approved open container for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
2021 was the first year the council approved lifting the open container ordinance on a trial basis. The trial was considered a success and this year, the council is making a few changes.
They include eliminating the wrist band needed to drink outside and expanding the open containers hours from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
The boundaries in which open containers is allowed is also growing this year to add some businesses that had requested to be included. The city also plans to add more signage explaining the rules.
Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie hopes the changes will only improve the rally experience.
Like last year, official event cups must be purchased and used for the beverage. As per state law, only malt beverage or wine may be consumed outside. And, a valid I.D. must be provided by everyone purchasing an open container cup.
All money raised by cup sales goes to Sturgis Rally Charities and Sturgis Rally Endowment Fund. Last year, $35,200 was raised.
