Ordinance dealing with nuisance clears 1st reading

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The Aberdeen City Council Monday night dealt with an ordinance dealing with the topic of nuisances.  The ordiance deals with chronic nuisance and those that lead to criminal activities.

City Attorney Ron Wager told the council what the ordinance is about.

Wager talks about the punishment for violating the ordinance.

Bob Schatz is a landlord for different locations.  he felt concerns how information comes about.

Schatz talks about who are criminally liable and the court proceeding which could hamper his ability to evict someone immediately.

Mayor Travis Schaunaman express concern about the broad term of nuisance.

Councilman Clint Rux was worried about landlords being unfairly called out for tenants who don’t abide by the guidelines of the city.  Ron Wager reminds everyone that the responsibility goes to these landlords.

Councilwoman Tiffany Langer told a story about a citizen talking about leaving the area because of her view an unsafe environment.

Council Josh Rife talks about why he supported this ordinance.

The council voted 9-0 to approve the first reading of the nuisance ordinance.
