PIERRE, S.D. (KCCR) – Two people on a sail boat in Lake Oahe are uninjured after their vessel overturned during severe weather last Friday. Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul says Central South Dakota Communications dispatched the Pierre Fire Department Rescue unit around 3:20 p.m.
Two boats were dispatched with the Pierre Rescue Unit. A severe thunderstorm warning was posted for lower Lake Oahe at the time and that delayed the rescue of the two male occupants.
Paul says the boaters were not familiar with what strong winds can do on a large body of water like Lake Oahe.
The owners of the sailboat worked with a Pierre-based underwater recovery company recover the vessel on Saturday. The boaters were in the water for less than an hour before being rescued.
