PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The Fourth of July weekend is here and with the celebration of our nation’s independence comes a yearly reminder of our freedom…garbage. Trash left behind by Independence Day revelers along the banks of the Missouri River. Paul Lepisto with the Izaak Walton League in Pierre says it doesn’t take much to keep the river clean.
Lepisto is leading an annual river clean up on July 6th to pick-up after sloppy celebrators and other debris accumulated along the river in the last year.
Lepisto says they seem to find more debris in the river every year.
Lespisto says they expect more garbage this year for the clean-up because of very strong winds in April and May. Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes, sunglasses, work gloves and a water bottle. Sign-up for the clean begins at 4:30 pm in Griffin Park or you can pre-register with Lepisto by calling 605-220-1219.
