Petition to place abortion on November ballot now filed

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – On Wednesday, a group filed a petition with 55,000 signatures to give South Dakotans the option to restore Roe v. Wade rights in South Dakota during the November election.

The Freedom Amendment to Restore Roe v. Wade was led by Dakotans for Health. Co-founder Rick Weiland presented the petition at a press conference at the Downtown Library in Sioux Falls on Wednesday.

This proposed constitutional amendment will restore the right to choose abortion, particularly in cases of rape, incest, and dangerous problem pregnancies. The petition will be filed with the Secretary of State.

The Life Defense Fund, a pro-life group, announced it will challenge the legitimacy of the abortion amendment due to what they claim is a lack of transparency from petitioners. The Life Defense Fund claims they have collected evidence that circulators failed to distribute the required circulator handout information to petition signers and encouraged signing the petition twice.
