PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- A Pierre woman will be spending much of the rest of her life in prison for the brutal death of a Pierre man in a Pierre apartment just over a year ago. Sixth Circuit Judge Bobbi Rank sentenced 39 year-old Miranda Henry to 75 years in the State Women’s Prison with no suspended prison time.
Most details of the case were sealed by Rank but in pleading for a significant sentence in court, Hughes County State’s Attorney Jessica LaMie says 49 year-old Christopher Mexican was stabbed multiple times with a utility knife, including long lacerations and wounds too numerous to count.
In Court, defense attorney Brad Schreiber says alcohol was a demon of Henry’s, who through evaluations, was found to suffer from episodes of alcohol induced psychosis when drinking. But Schreiber also told Rank Henry asked for a prison term of 20- to 35 years, something he had never seen before as a defense attorney. La Mie says Henry’s criminal history played heavy in the sentence.
La Mie noted in Court that Mexican was the only real support system Henry had going through life and that she killed her support system. Members of Mexican’s family spoke at sentencing, noting the difficult time they’ve had getting younger family members to try and understand where Mexican was and why he wasn’t coming back. Henry will receive credit for 380 days spent in the Hughes County Jail along with being responsible for funeral costs and other restitution
