Plane crash at Watertown Regional Airport

WATERTOWN, S.D.(KWAT)–There were no injuries Sunday afternoon when a single-engine plane crashed at Watertown Regional Airport.

There were two people on board. They were an aviation student from Lake Area Technical College (LATC), and a flight instructor from LATC.

The school’s president, Tiffany Sanderson, says the student was practicing touch and go landings when the engine on the Piper aircraft failed.

The instructor was able to bring the plane down in the airfield space just after 5 p.m., but was not able to make it to a runway. The plane came to a stop after hitting a fence near the airport’s main entrance.

There was a small fuel spill as a result of the crash.

Sanderson says local and federal authorities are investigating.
