Plane crash near Groton kills two

GROTON , S.D. (— A single-engine airplane crashed Sunday morning north of Groton, killing two people.

Dave Lunzman, chief deputy with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the crash. He said two people were in the plane. At the time, Lunzman didn’t know their conditions, but confirmed one person was airlifted from the scene.

One victim died on the scene, and the other was transported to Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to the Brown County Coroner Michael Carlsen.

The crash was reported around 11 a.m. near the Groton airport.

The Groton Fly-in/Drive-in was this weekend. Scott Meints, Brown County Emergency Management director, said the crash was related to activities at the air show.

He said the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating.

The airport is about 4 miles north of Groton along State Highway 37.

Identities of the victims have not been released, pending notifications of the families. Carlsen said the victims were from the Garden City area.
