Portions of Aberdeen Central High School on “stay in place”

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- On Monday, Aberdeen Central High School Administrative Office was placed on “stay in place” due to a disturbance taking place there.

Aberdeen School Superintendent Becky Guffin released the following statement at 1:21pm:

“Good afternoon CHS parents.  This is Jason Uttermark principal at Central High School.  An altercation between students occured in the Central High School office today.  As the SRO was gaining control of the situation, he was injured and is expected to make a full recovery.  The student was detained with charges pending.  No weapons were involved with the situation.  Regular school functions were able to continue as normal.  We wanted you to have this information to serve as an assurance that student and staff safety will always be our top priority.  Thank you for placing your trust in us to keep our schools safe.”

The Aberdeen Police Department released the following statement:

“At approximately 12:15 pm, an altercation occurred between three students at Aberdeen Central High School. As the school resource officer(John Kirnan) was attempting to intervene and gain control of the situation, he was injured. The officer was transported by ambulance to the hospital for evaluation and released.
As this situation was occurring, additional law enforcement officers and medics from Aberdeen Fire & Rescue responded to the high school to assist the officer. One juvenile student was arrested and charged with three counts of Simple Assault, Obstructing Law Enforcement, Resisting Arrest, and Disruption of School. There were no weapons used during the assault.”
