Prep is underway for the 100th session of South Dakota Legislature

BROOKINGS, S.D.(KJJQ)- Next year will mark the 100th session of the South Dakota Legislature.

A couple of lawmakers, Representative Tony Venhuisen of Sioux Falls and Senator David Wheeler of Huron thought it would be a good idea to commemorate the milestone.

A committee has been formed to explore ideas. They met this week and Venhuisen was elected chair.

Among the ideas: compiling oral histories from current and past legislative leaders, historical exhibits in the Capitol, outreach to schools, an all-legislator reunion or Centennial Ball, and updating a biographical dictionary of legislators that was compiled for the state’s centennial.

The committee also endorsed an idea from non-legislative member Bernie Hunhoff. The former lawmaker says there should be some sort of statement in the Capitol building that conveys the unique nature of South Dakota’s citizen legislature.

Hunhoff suggested possible writers but he was chosen by the committee to come up with a first draft of the statement.
