ABERDEEN, S.D.(Press Release)- The Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen announce plans to create a beautiful outdoor green space for the public on a portion of its Presentation Heights property.
The Sisters have made the decision to remove the main building, known as the Motherhouse (Presentation Convent main building), and create a natural space that promotes tranquility and inner peace. The Sisters hope this legacy gift will benefit all.
Repurposing the building would be cost-prohibitive. In hopes of identifying a new use for the building, numerous groups were toured through the building, but the cost of renovation and maintenance was not sustainably feasible and could negatively impact the environment.
“Continuing to provide a peacefully reflective space for all to enjoy has long been a dream of the Presentation Sisters,” said Sister Mary Thomas, President of the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen. Ideas include dedicated green space that could include trails for walking and biking, space for play, meditation, and picnicking and outdoor learning events.
“This is how the Sisters can continue to minister to others in a new and creative way,” S. Mary Thomas said.
Space for contemplation and recreation aligns with the Presentation Sisters’ values of hospitality, promoting peace and renewing one’s inner spirit.
Christian spirituality has always recognized the natural world as God’s creation. Providing a green space for citizens and visitors could help facilitate a deeper bond between the person and nature. Sunsets at Presentation Heights often cause one to give praise to God.
“The Sisters place a high value on spaces where people can find solitude for contemplative reflection and soul searching. Such spaces provide potential for healing and community building as people shift their focus from the concerns of everyday life or the clamor of fast-paced society to the presence of Christ within,” shared S. Mary Thomas.
The hope for all who enter here is that the quiet beauty of green space will mirror the kinds of spiritual peace and nourishment that the Sisters experienced in their years of communal prayer at this location. Thus, the tradition of prayer and contemplation will flourish in a new way. The Sisters hope this green space will be a source of spiritual nourishment and recreation for generations to come.
