Program to help landowners with buffer strips not getting much use

YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – A state program giving property tax breaks to landowners that set aside buffer strips near streams and rivers isn’t getting much use.

Dan Klimisch, Chairman of the James River Water Development District, says there aren’t enough incentives with the program.

Klimisch says water districts are having talks about changing the program to increase participation.

Klimisch says part of the problem is the potential loss of property taxes to counties.

The State Department of Revenue reported only 30 applications from nine counties last year.
