Public asked to fill out survey for statewide lead service line inventory

PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- South Dakotans are being asked to fill out a brief survey as part of a statewide– and nationwide– lead (led) pipe service line inventory.

The survey can be found online through a link at SDWaterPipes.com.

City of Pierre Construction Operations Manager Jeff Runyan says water is lead-free when it leaves the treatment plant.

Runyan says you don’t need any specialized equipment to complete the survey– just a coin or key, a magnet and a smartphone.

Runyan says the website where people report their findings is operated by the state and the US Environmental Protection Agency.

The state Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources says most drinking water pipes are lead free. However, water can absorb lead if it travels through lead pipes on its way to residents’ faucets.
