PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- Calling it one of the worst kept secrets in politics, South Dakota Public Utilities Commission Chairman Chris Nelson officially announced his intention to run for re-election.

Nelson says he will need support of republican party delegates to get the nomination.

Nelson says he will run on his record on the PUC.

Nelson was appointed by Governor Dennis Daugaard to the PUC in 2011, then elected in 2012 and again in 2016.

Nelson also served as Secretary of State from 2002 to 2010.
