PUC looking at re-powering issue with turbine blades

WATERTOWN, S.D. (KWAT) — It’s not an issue the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission is dealing with yet, but might be at some point in the future.

Commissioner Chris Nelson says the issue is what to do with wind turbine blades when a wind farm is taken out of service or is being “re-powered” with new, more efficient blades.

Nelson says the PUC wants to make sure there are plans in place when a wind farm eventually goes off the grid.

Nelson says there are recycling opportunities for some of these old wind turbine parts.

Nelson says as technology advances are made, the “re-powering” of wind farms will become more common.
