Race planned for Sunday in Sturgis in jeopardy because of weather

STURGIS, S.D.(KBHB) – The Sturgis City Council will need to meet in special session Saturday because the threat of rain may postpone Sunday’s inaugural Sturgis TT flat track race.

Sturgis Director of Communications of Deb Holland says in their final contract with A.F.T. Events, Monday was designated as rain date should Sunday’s races get rained out. However, she says, the council will need to adjust the resolution that was passed closing the roads for the race.

Cameron Gray with A.M.A. Pro Racing says they have put a tarp over the dirt section of the track.

Gray says if the weather forces postponement, they will go right away on Monday.

The Sturgis City Council approved a rain date for the Spirit of Sturgis TT Race.

According to a press release from the City of Sturgis, the race is currently scheduled for Sunday, August 11. According to the National Weather Service, the Sturgis area is expected to have an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday.

Sunday is also the official last day of the Sturgis Rally.

The FOX television network will record the race and will air it next weekend on Saturday, August 17.
