Rapid City Fire Department addresses suspicious fires

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – A string of fires kept Rapid City firefighters busy early Sunday morning, though a suspicious pattern quickly emerged after four of the five blazes happened within one mile radius of one another, and appear to have been human-caused.

Tessa (Yea-Ger) Jaeger, public information officer for RCFD, said the fires started around 11:30 Saturday night in a garbage bin.

RCFD and local police are currently investigating the case, in the meantime, Jaeger said keeping waste collection in a private area of the home could help prevent further fires.

Though a busy night, Jaeger said the fires didn’t cause strain on RCFD.

The criminal arson investigation continues, overseen by the Rapid City Police Department, while RCFD investigates the causes of the fires.
