Rapid City Police Department react to allegation of racism

RAPID CITY, S.D.(KOTA)- The Rapid City Police Department has long been the subject of allegations from the local indigenous community of racism, calls that have been amplified by recent clashes between activists and law enforcement.

Brendyn Medina, spokesperson for the RCPD, said historical trauma is something taken very seriously within the department.

Medina said despite initiatives encouraging more indigenous peoples to work for RCPD, the goal of accurately reflecting the demographics of the city within the department remains unachieved.

Medina said residents struggling with feelings of safety with the police department should reach out and see RCPD’s work firsthand.

The Rapid City Police Department also participates in community outreach, including stuffing backpacks for schoolchildren and providing rides to safe places for people experiencing homelessness.
