Rapid City School Board to decide whether to ban a collection of books

RAPID CITY, S.D.(KOTA)- The Rapid City Area School Board is seeing pushback from those concerned with a plan to potentially destroy a collection of books.

These titles include “How Beautiful We Were: A Novel”, “Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic”, “The Perks of Being A Wallflower”, “Girl, Woman, Other: A Novel”, and “The Circle”, and represents 355 total copies.

One teacher responding to the situation is Timmi Bubac, who clarified these books are student choice.

Bubac explained exactly how these books found their way into Rapid City schools.

Bubac questioned the legality of destroying these books.

A number of parents also took to the podium to explain what the law says, and highlighted what parts of the books offended them, directing much criticism to Fun Home, a graphic novel that tackles themes of distant family members, emotional abuse, suicidal thoughts, and the process of coming out as lesbian.

The board has voted to delay the decision to destroy the books until at least Tuesday.
