Rapid City woman sentenced for role in fatal motorcycle crash

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Rapid City woman has been sentenced to spend at least 8 years in prison for driving drunk and killing her friend in a motorcycle crash.

Prosecutors say Sophia Elbow Shield had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system when she crashed in Box Elder in July 2018 and killed 62-year-old Brian Minor, a passenger.

Judge Robert Gusinsky imposed a 15-year sentence Tuesday, but suspended 7 years. The Rapid City Journals says that as part of a plea deal, two drunken driving counts, as well as charges of careless driving, driving with a suspended license and driving without a motorcycle license were dismissed.
