Reactions from area legislators to the failure to override Governor Rhoden’s veto

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- Last week, Governor Larry Rhoden vetoed HB1169 addressing regulation for petitions for placing amendments to the South Dakota Constitution.  On Monday the South Dakota Legislature was unable to override the veto.  The South Dakota House did vote to override on a 50-18 vote but the South Dakota Senate voted 16-16 was fell short of the 24 votes needed to override.

Area legislators reacted to the vote that took place on Monday.

SD House:

District 23 Representative Spencer Gosch from Glenham:

“Just another opportunity to back to the drawing board.”

District 3 Representative Brandei Schaefbauer:

“I’m disappointed the veto was not defeated.  We in South Dakota, believe that under God the people rule, and in order to change our constitution all of the people of South Dakota should have a say.  This bill would let the smaller population counties have just as much say as larger population counties.  It’s unfortunate the vote was sustained.”

District 1 Representative Logan Manhart:

“I echo the prespective of Brandei.  I supported the bill in the House and voted to overturn the veto.  Though the veto was sustained, I look forward supporting this type of legislation in the future.

South Dakota Senate:

District 1 Senator Michael Rohl:

“I actually support the constitution, and glad it was defeated.”

District 3 Senator Carl Perry:(paraphrasing)

“I was in support in HB1169 and was disappointed the veto wasn’t overridden.  I am still in support of our Governor Larry Rhoden despite not agreeing with the veto.”
