SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- Mayor Paul TenHaken asked legislators to avoid “culture war” issues this year, but now the culture war has come to city hall.
A number of citizens spoke up during the public comment section of Tuesday’s city council meeting…reading segments of children’s books from the public library.
Former State House Speaker and Gubernatorial candidate Steve Haugard was there.
Haugard says the idea of having the legislature avoid those issues is off base.
The culture wars Mayor Paul TenHaken was hoping legislators would avoid have come to Sioux Falls city hall.
The Mayor recently stated he wanted lawmakers to focus on issues that help local officials conduct city and county business.
Several citizens read graphic portions of children’s books during the city council meeting, asking city officials to protect children from those materials.
State Representative Bethany Soye:
Soye supported a bill sponsored by Representative Mike Stevens of Yankton was adopted unanimously by the legislature, which led to some changes at the Sioux Falls Public Library program.
