PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- Thousands with lawn chairs in tow, took in the Let Freedom Fly Airshow at Pierre Regional Airport this weekend. The show was a mix of carnival and history lesson as legendary warbirds and aerial acrobats like Bill Stein and his Edge 540 wowed the crowd.
Kent Pietsch flew high above Pierre and shut the engine off on his plane and guided it through a routine then into the palm of Pierre Mayor Steve Harding’s hand.
Pietsch also flew a plane that lost parts and landed one a moving truck. The show also featured a race between an airplane and Mark Smith’s Slayer jet car.
Announcer Mark Peterson presented a detailed history of the older history aircraft as the vintage planes performed. The show ended with a B-1 B Lancer bomber and a demonstration from the U-S Air Force F-16 VIPER demo team.
The F-16 carried a special red, white and blue paint scheme to honor 50 years of the F-16. Funds raised during the two-day airshow are going to the Capital Area United Way.
