Recap of day 1 of the Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force meeting

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- Tuesday night was the first of two days scheduled for the Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force at NSU.

Chair of the Committee, Senator Chris Carr of Sioux Falls talks about the purpose of the committee.

Carr talked about three subgroups from the task force.

Carr also address the work group dealing with funding for schools.

Carr also talked about a pending amendment established to try to abolish property taxes.

Vice Chair is the Speaker of the South Dakota House Jon Hansen of Dell Rapids.

Focus of night one is hearing from the general public.  We will keep those names anonymous.

One Aberdeen resident talks about how his property tax increased within the last year.

He goes on to say how he cope with the location he lives in the city.

A Langford school board member address the opt out done for the school in the community.

A resident all the way from Mount Vernon came to Aberdeen to address his concerns with fairness.

After hearing testimony, legislators from the task force weighed in.  Senator Taffy Howard of Rapid City address the issue of potentially eliminating the property tax.

Representative Scott Odenbach of Spearfish talked about one option of cutting spending on various programs that could lead to lower property taxes.

Speaker Hansen addressed the desire of helping younger residents in the state get an opportunity to pursue their dreams.

The Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force will continue their meetings in Aberdeen on Wednesday.
