Recap of Tuesday study dealing with regional jails

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- On Tuesday, the summer study dealing with regional jails & correctional facilities met for the final time in Pierre.

Brown County Commissioner Mike Wiese discuss his stop in Walworth County after learning that the county could go broke if they build their own jail.

Wiese talks about what Brown County is doing to help out with other counties in the region.

District 3 Senator Al Novstrup talks about draft bill 107 which was discussed at the committee meeting.

District 3 Representative Carl Perry talks about what is the role of the regional jail authority.

Perry discuss his stance on presumptive probation.

Novstrup talks about achieving these new jails at a reasonable price for the state.

Hughes County has agreed to assist the South Dakota Department of Correction with the overcrowding problem.  Wiese talks about whether Brown County can help out with that.

Aberdeen & Brown County lobbyist Julie Johnson talks about the county needs to get going with the new complex for the regional jail.  Wiese explains why this needs to happen soon.

Perry talks about how much pressure is on the South Dakota legislature to get something done.

The final draft now heads to the South Dakota Executive Board which will meet later this month.
