Redistricting Tour underway in South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- The House and Senate Legislative Redistricting Committees start their road tour today. The three day tour are holding public sessions in Box Elder, Mission, Mobridge, Aberdeen, Watertown and Sioux Falls.

Committee member, Representative Ryan Cwach of Yankton, says the local input is important.

Cwach says there can be local issues that have an impact on how a district should be drawn.

Cwach says there are a lot of pieces to fit together.

Committee member, Senator Jim Bolin of Canton, says it will be good to hear what voters are thinking.

At their last meeting, Senate members voted to approve their version of the districts around Sioux Falls. House members disagreed and left.

Bolin says there will need to be further negotiations.

Bolin says if legislators can’t reach agreement, the decisions are then taken out of their hands.

Aberdeen will host the public forum on Tuesday, 1pm at the ARCC, 225 3rd Ave SE.

A special session of the legislature is scheduled for November 8th to approve the final district map.
