YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – Releases from Gavins Point Dam on the Missouri River near Yankton have been reduced for a time but will be going back up rapidly.
John Remus, Chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division of the Corps of Engineers in Omaha, says they dropped releases over the past weekend.
That drop was in response to record or near record flooding on the James, Vermillion and Big Sioux Rivers.
Remus says they will then ramp up releases by this weekend.
Remus says they increase in releases would have been necessary in any case.
Storage in the reservoir system is now at 65 million acre feet with about nine million acre feet in the flood control zone.
