PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – What started as a legislative resolution to rebuke South Dakota Congressmen Dusty Johnson for voting against President Trumps emergency measures to secure the U.S. – Mexican border, turned into a flood emergency message.
The initial sponsor, Senator Lance Russell of Hot Springs thought it was important to get legislative intent on the record concerning the border situation.
Russell says he agreed to a friendly hoghouse move by Senator Troy Heinert of Mission to insert language asking the states Congressional delegation to move quickly once a flood disaster is declared by Governor Kristi Noem. Heinert says the legislature needs to weigh in.
Senator Craig Kennedy of Yankton moved for a do pass recommendation and unanimous consent.
The issue was debated in the Senate State Affairs Committee that met Friday morning before the final day of the 2019 legislative session.
