Roberts County Sheriff’s Deputy assaulted

SISSETON, S.D.(KXLG)- A Roberts County Sheriff’s Deputy was assaulted on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, while attempting to arrest an individual with an active warrant, according to a press release from the Roberts County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred behind the Sisseton Warming House during a routine patrol. The deputy encountered a group consuming alcohol in public and recognized one individual who was known to have an active arrest warrant and was on parole for a previous assault on law enforcement.

As the deputy attempted to take the individual into custody, the suspect reportedly became physically aggressive and tried to grab the deputy’s department-issued TASER. The deputy was able to maintain control and prevent the weapon from being taken.

During the ensuing struggle, the suspect allegedly armed themselves with a sharp wooden branch and began repeatedly lunging towards the deputy’s face in a stabbing motion. The deputy managed to control the suspect until additional law enforcement units arrived at the scene.

The Roberts County Sheriff’s Office clarified rumors circulating in the community, stating that the deputy sustained only minor injuries to their hand and did not require hospitalization. The deputy remains on duty.

The suspect has been charged with multiple offenses, including:

  • Aggravated Assault Against a Law Enforcement Officer – SDCL 22-18-1.05 (Class 2 Felony)
  • Disarming a Law Enforcement Officer – SDCL 22-11-39 (Class 4 Felony)
  • Simple Assault Against a Law Enforcement Officer – SDCL 22-18-1.05 (Class 6 Felony)
  • Resisting Arrest – SDCL 22-11-4 (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
  • Obstruction of Law Enforcement – SDCL 22-11-6 (Class 1 Misdemeanor)
  • Attempted Intentional Damage to Property $400 or Less – SDCL 22-34-1 (Class 2 Misdemeanor)
