Britton, SD: The funeral service for Rochelle “Rocky” Winder will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at First Presbyterian Church in Britton. Dan Winder, Rocky’s son, and Pastor Sandi Goehring will officiate the service. Burial will be at the Britton Cemetery.

Rochelle Marie Winder was born September 10, 1936 in Britton, SD to Rudolf and Cecilia (Trautner) Sckerl. She was raised on the family farm near Lake City, SD and attended her early schooling at country schools. At the age of 15 she moved to Britton and attended Britton High School.

On January 30, 1954 Rocky married Roy L. Winder in Britton. They made their home in Britton, and in 1960 built the house they called home for the next sixty plus years. In that home they raised four children, entertained their friends and family in their basement, and later on were blessed with grandkids that filled their home with love.

She worked for the laundromat and at Dakin’s Pharmacy for a few years while also focusing on raising the children. Once the children were grown, she earned her GED and pursued becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. She worked as a CNA and a restorative aide for over 19 years at the Marshall Manor in Britton before retiring in April of 2005.

Rocky was a devoted wife and lived to honor her wedding vows to Roy. When his health started to decline, she took wonderful care of him, which allowed him to stay at home with her as long as possible. Roy later moved into the nursing home but Rocky still showed her love by visiting him every day. Roy passed away on October 6, 2024.

Her dedication to her country and those who served the United States was unmatched. She was patriotic and was honored to be married to a United States Marine. Each year she would help celebrate the Marine Corps birthday, with the early yearly celebrations hosted at her and Roy’s home but eventually moved to the VFW in Britton for more space as attendance grew. She attended every Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day Program and for many years helped coordinate the lunches afterwards. She was a proud member of the Britton Legion Post #80 Women’s Auxiliary.

She was a 72 year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Britton. In her free time she loved watching old westerns, Hallmark movies and all the Christmas movie classics. She was a Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed watching the games each season. Rocky was a friend to many, no matter their age, she loved to visit and always made everyone feel welcomed.

Rocky passed away Sunday, September 6, 2026 at Avera St. Lukes in Aberdeen, SD at the age of 89.

She is survived by her children: Cindy (Mark) Hartinger, Dan (Carla) Winder, Annette (Paul) Scanlan and BobbiJo Almos; her grandchildren: Brian Hartinger, Matthew (Stephanie) Hartinger, Nathan (Leslie) Hartinger, Timothy Hartinger, Alyse Winder, Alex (Marie) Winder, KC (Bryahna) Almos and Jonathan (Sarah) Van Beek, 14 great-grandchildren, and very special friends Jeanne Furman and Jane Tyler.

Preceding her in death was her husband of 70 years, Roy; her parents; an infant daughter, Mary Jo; her siblings, Max (Jerry) Sckerl, Maxine (Leonard) Heitmann and Rudy (Mary) Sckerl, and a son-in-law, Krag Almos.
