State A Tournament in Madison, SD @ Madison Golf CC [Day 2 of 2] GGID: 25SDGIRLSA
MADISON, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – After trailing by four strokes on day one as a team, and Claire Crawford having a four stroke lead, unfortunately for the Cavaliers, neither of them could quite close the deal to wrap up the state A golf tournament in Madison on Tuesday at Madison Golf CC.
Collectively, the Cavaliers finished in third place behind second place Sioux Falls Christian & twenty strokes behind first place St. Thomas More. The other Cavaliers (STM) pieced together a fantastic day as a squad. Rylan Horning was the medalist, at the beginning of the day, she was five strokes back of first place, she’d finish three strokes ahead of the field, an eight shot swing.
Aberdeen Roncalli’s Claire Crawford, who led after day one, had a tough front nine. She would bogey the first six holes and then double bogey hole seven and triple bogey hole nine. Even after a difficult front nine, she locked in on the back and competed well down the stretch, putting herself in a great position for the championship.
With five holes to play, Crawford was tied with Rylan Horning. Hole 14 would be the hole that for all intents and purposes would decide the crown. Crawford birdied that hole on Monday, she would par today, while Horning drilled an eagle to go up two strokes, and that’d be a lead she wouldn’t relinquish.
Both Horning & Crawford bogey’d the par five, seventeenth hole and the west river Cavalier finished the day with a birdie on the 18th hole for the crown.
Head Coach and region 1A Coach Of The Year Jon Murdy reflected on the team tournament, “I’m very happy the way the team battled today. We kept playing for the team first.”
Referring to the tournament from Claire Crawford and her runner-up performance, Murdy said, “Claire had a great tournament. She played hard for two days. It wasn’t the outcome she or I or the team wanted, but I’m very proud of how she played and carried herself.”
On paper, the Cavaliers should be in a great spot to compete again at a high level in 2026, as they don’t have any seniors apart of their program this season.
