PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- South Dakota state Senators debated a bill that would provide treatment for people arrested on a charge of ingestion of drugs. South Dakota is one of a few states that still has criminal penalties for consuming an illegal drug.
Senator Michael Rohl (roll) of Aberdeen led the hoghouse that brought the bill to the floor.
Senator Helene Duhamel (doo-ham-ul) of Rapid City said the necessary treatment resources are not available.
Despite coming from committee with a do pass recommendation, the bill failed on a vote of seventeen to eighteen.
