SB40 passes the Senate State Affairs Committee

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota Senate State Affairs Committee heard testimony on Monday on SB40.  SB40 would allow a candidate for Governor to select his or her running mate for Lieutenant Governor & to allows to voters to select the candidates for the various statewide positions such as Attorney General or Secretary of State.

The prime sponsor is Senator David Johnson of Rapid City and he explains what SB40 does.

Johnson gave a comparison between his county’s voters in Pennington to those that represent the county as delegates at the Republican convention in Watertown.

Rick Weible from Elkton is a delegate representating Brookings County & he explains why he was opposed to this bill.

Senator Michael Rohl of Aberdeen talks about his support of this bill.

President Pro Temp Lee Schoenbeck of Watertown is also a supporter and gave an example of how precinct members shun the voters of Clark County.

The committee voted 6-3 to approve the bill.  The bill now heads to the Senate floor.
