Scam callers pose as Aberdeen American News representative

ABERDEEN, S.D.(Aberdeen American News)- The Aberdeen Police Department has received at least one reports of a new phone call scam in which callers pose as employees of the Aberdeen American News.

Capt. Tanner Jondahl said the police department has only received one report of the scam so far, but issued a news release because the scam is unique: the person calling poses as a representative of the paper, offering a deal on weekend editions of the paper, but the Aberdeen American News does not have a Sunday paper.

The scammer then attempts to gain personal and financial information from the person on the other side of the phone.

Jondahl said people who receive calls like this should contact the business directly to make sure the call is legitimate, either by an email or phone number posted on the website. Cold calls are not common anymore, he said, so it is important to check the legitimacy of the caller.

“If it sounds like it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” said Jondahl.
