School Superintendents react to Governor’s 6% increase in state aid to education

PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- A six percent increase in state aid to education was included in Governor Kristi Noem’s budget proposal to the legislature.

Yankton Schools Superintendent Wayne Kindle says that was a nice surprise.

Kindle says the increase has to extend beyond teachers.

Kindle says the increase is far from a done deal.

The six percent increase would also apply to state employees and Medicaid funded health care providers.

Avon School Superintendent Tom Culver says the Governor’s proposal of a six percent increase in state aid for education topped their agenda. He says they will be working with legislators to explain how school budgets are put together.

Culver says any increase is state aid has to be spread out over a lot of expenses.

Culver says there are always rules with state funding.

Legislators start the 2022 session on January 11th.
