PIERRE, S.D.(KELO)- Lawmakers in Pierre are eager to unravel the $1..8 million embezzlement case within the South Dakota Department of Social Services.

Former employee Lonna Carroll is accused of embezzling Child Protection Services funds over a 13-year period.

State Senator Tim Reed of the Government Operations Audit Committee says it’s hard to understand how the theft could have gone unnoticed for 13 years.

Carroll will make her first court appearance on Thursday.
