SD legislators looking to improve medical marijuana laws

PIERRE, S.D.(KELO)- South Dakota Legislators  are reviewing ideas to fine-tune the state’s newly-adopted medical marijuana laws.

One concern raised in hearings Monday is how to deal with patients who have a criminal record…which often includes substance abuse.

Corrections Secretary Kelly Wasko testified before the committee.

Dr. Francine Arneson of Sioux Falls questioned the ethics of singling out former offenders, saying the medical process already includes safeguards to prevent abuse.

Secretary Wasko said the attestation process is intended to confirm that medical marijuana is the best treatment for offenders dealing with medical issues.
