SD sees spike in active COVID cases, five more deaths, hospitalizations drop

PIERRE, S.D. (HubCityRadio.com) – The number of active COVID cases spiked, there were five new deaths reported, and hospitalizations dropped according to totals released by the South Dakota Department of Health today. The state reported 772 new confirmed cases and 254 new recoveries, increasing the amount of active infections to 5,188 (there were 3,987 one week ago). There were also five new deaths (two in Lincoln County, and one each in Grant, Minnehaha and Yankton counties), moving the total COVID-related deaths to 277. The number of individuals hospitalized in association with the virus dropped by 17 to 267.

In all, South Dakota has had 27,215 confirmed cases and 21,750 recoveries.

Locally, Brown County had 61 new cases and 11 new recoveries, increasing the amount of active infections to 266. So far, the county has had 1,488 cases, 1,218 recoveries, and four total COVID-related deaths.

Statewide, Minnehaha County has had 7,708 confirmed cases, followed by Pennington County with 3,001, and Lincoln County with 1,740. Other counties totals include Codington with 1,080, Beadle with 919, Brookings with 907, Meade with 684, and Clay with 619.
