SD Senate passes bill to extend the length of permits for CAFOs

PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- A bill that would extend the length of permits for confined animal feeding operations in South Dakota has cleared the Senate Chamber.  S-B 52 would double the renewal timeframe for a CAFO to 10 years from the current five.  Prime sponsor, Senator Mary Duvall of Pierre says the South Dakota permit has no wiggle room for violator.

Senator Jim Bolin questioned the bills impact on local control.

Senator Troy Heinert of Mission rose in opposition to the bill.

Senate Bill 52 passed on a 27 to seven vote with one vote excused.
