PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The South Dakota Senate took up the only veto so far issued during this year’s legislative session Thursday. Governor Kristi Noem vetoed Senate Bill 76 which would have increased the amount of state lottery winnings that are not subjected to the state checking to see if debts are owed to the state by the winner. Child support is one such debt that could be taken from lottery winnings. Senator David Wheeler of Huron says South Dakota’s number is 100-dollars and urged the Senate to override Noem’s veto.
Senator Jean Hunhoff of Yankton rose in support of the Governor’s veto.
The Senate needed 24 votes to override the veto. The final vote was 15-19.
