PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- A voter-approved constitutional amendment permitting recreational marijuana is being challenged in Hughes County. The first hearing Constitutional Amendment A was held last week. The court challenge will make the job of South Dakota legislators difficult.
District 24 Representative Will Mortentson of Pierre says a decision on ‘A’ will come after this year’s Legislature adjourns and may require a special session. Representative Mike Weisgram says lawmakers are being encouraged to study up.
Mortenson believes none of South Dakota’s marijuana planning may matter by next year.
District 24 Senator Mary Duvall says everyone she’s consulted from currently marijuana-friendly states have said it would take a minimum of 14 months to setup smart and appropriate programs to regulate legalized marijuana use in South Dakota.
