SDFU address property taxes at SD State Fair Saturday

HURON, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- Saturday was South Dakota Farmers Union Day at the South Dakota State Fair.

SDFU held a forum addressing property taxes.  the theme was “Who pays the bill? South Daktoa’s Property Tax Crossroads”.  The panelist were Lincoln County Commissioner Jim Schmidt, District 12 Representative Greg Jamison, Huron School Superintendent Kraig Sreihhoff, Budget and Finance Commissioner Jim Terwilliger, and SDFU President Doug Sombke.

Moderator for the forum was SDFU lobbyist Mitch Ritcher who reminded the audience how much the state get in property taxes.

Commissioner Schmidt discuss how property taxes are determined.

Schmidt discuss what impact cutting services within the county or city can have economically.

Representative Jamison who also is on the Property Tax Task Force this summer discuss a bill he’s working on for the next session.

Jamison talks about the possible of raising the sales tax that could have an impact on property taxes.

Superintendent Sreihhoff discuss how funding is determined for school districts across the state.

Sreihhoff aldos talked about the option of opt-0uts.

Commission Terwilliger inform the audience the proposal that Governor Rhoden is working on to address property taxes.

Terwilliger discuss the options available to address property tax reductions.

President Sombke focused on the rural communities beginning with education.

Sombke also addressed funding needed for rural counties to run effectively.

The Property Tax Task Force still have at least two more session remaining this year.
