BROOKINGS, S.D. (WNAX) – South Dakota’s growing sheep and wool industry will be showcased at the 28th Annual SDSU Lamb Bonanza Saturday, Jan. 4 in Brookings. SDSU Extension Sheep Specialist Jeff Held says the event will feature product sampling and the auctioning of lamb pelts to raise money for student scholarships during the SDSU basketball double header. Over the last five years the auction has averaged $1000 a pelt.
He says sheep production continues to expand in the state and across the country and this is a way to promote that flourishing industry.
Held says with the ethnic demand consumption of lamb in the United States exceeds supply by nearly 50% and as a result that has kept the market strong for producers.
The promotion is sponsored by the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association, the SDSU Animal Science Department.
