BROOKINGS, S.D.(KJJQ)- South Dakota State University Barry Dunn is the winner of the 2022 Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Higher Education.
Dunn will receive an $50,000 and an awards sculpture.
Dunn was recognized for his work to improve college access for Native Americans through the Wokini Initiative.
The Wokini Initiative began in 2016 and includes scholarships and the new American Indian Student Center.
Dunn says the Initiative provides students an opportunity to embrace their culture while “working toward a future that positively impacts society”.
Dunn was also instrumental in advocating for a new federally funded grant program for tribal students at 22 land grant and tribal universities.
McGraw Prize awardees are submitted for consideration by their peers with winners selected during three rounds of judging.
