MITCHELL, S.D.(KMIT)- South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson was recently in Mitchell to talk about the revival of a regional economic study that was once a part of the Secretary of State’s office. A memorandum of understanding with Northern State University used to provide for the production of such reports. This practice lapsed before Johnson took office as Secretary of State. She explains the revival of that economic report and the new partnership with Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell:
Johnson talks about the purpose of this economic report:
Some highlights of the report include: South Dakota’s Gross Domestic Product in 2023 was $69.5 billion, an increase of 155% over the past two decades, and the agricultural sector continues to be the number one driver of economic prosperity for South Dakota dwarfing all other industries with tourism coming in a distant second.
The report will soon be available online at the Secretary of State’s website.
